Working 12 is a journey of self-discovery, expression, processing, reflection, pain, love, and self care. It was created over the course of 12 months and acts as a visual journal, addressing things such as empowerment, toxicity, solidarity, current events, social justice, relationships, personal struggles, and accomplishments.
Working 12 uses heavy symbolism, repeated themes, and a constant 16x16 format.
The In-Between is both the name of this piece, as well as is a sort of mental state I've been exploring for the past several years. It is meditation, very akin to walking meditation, but instead like painting meditation. Its result is even time to process, channel, and flow things in the world or in my life onto paper acting as an immediate processing cycle, bypassing the usual process and planning that is had before most work. It often results in a sort of visual journal. I use repeated symbolism to allow for an easier unbroken channel to represent an idea. . This piece is about seeing new opportunity and paths.
The tiger is a sort of ultimate strength that is resting and unneeded. Frogs represent positivity, good luck, a constant, being carefree. The bird is remembering lost things that make me who I am. The hazy green coil is snake, toxicity and empowerment/strength. The trees are drawn from a beloved patch. The thumb prints are empowerment and autonomy against oppressive authority. The black drops are seeds, symbolic of work, and growth. . When seen in real life, you can read at the bottom, "Focus on pale yellow sun at middle." . The idea is when doing this, while focusing on the little sun, the less defined clouds then appear and you see a different little drifty world seperate from the rest of the painting...and that's the feeling of being in the in-between.
